Mapping the self: a foundational guide to locational astrology
Monday (Moon day) Inner Work Lesson, 15th of September
Welcome to the very first entry of the Locational Astrology Learning Hub by My Astro Diaries!
Before we step into the technical layers of locational astrology, let’s begin with the most important territory of all: your inner world. This learning hub is also created not just to teach you how to read an astrocartography map and to use other locational astrology tools, but to help you explore what that map is pointing toward within yourself, so your soul can grow as well.
Because in locational astrology, place is never actually just external. Every line is a mirror and an opportunity for growth and self-acknowledgement, whether you are actually traveling or ready to do remote activation (a whole entry will be dedicated to this over time). Locational astrology actually reflects something stirring in your psyche, something ready to be seen, integrated, or brought to life…
That’s why we begin here with awareness, because this is the actual foundation, the soft ground beneath the data and the deeper context for everything you’ll learn going forward. So, this first entry is a calling to slow down and to tune in. To consider that what’s “out there” is also “in here.” That every single line on your map is also a rite of passage, and that every map line is a doorway to a new layer of yourself ready to be discovered.
Now, let’s begin.
Believe it or not, but you exist in all places, all at once
I want you to think about your life for a second. Think about the paths you’ve taken, the roads not taken, and all those "what if" moments that occasionally pop into your head.
What if I’d taken that job in Austin?
What if I’d never left my hometown?
What if I’d said yes to that trip to Bali?
We tend to think of our lives as a single, linear thread, stretching from point A to point B, with us dutifully walking the line. But what if I told you that’s not the whole story? What if I told you that a version of you is living out all of those possibilities, right now?
No, I haven’t been binge-watching too much sci-fi (well, maybe a little). I’m talking about a concept of locational astrology. And here’s the mind-bending part: all those lines are active, all the time.
That means the version of you thriving under your, let’s say, Sun MC line, already exists energetically in that location. Are you who is facing a profound transformation on your Pluto line? They’re there, too. Are you finding creative inspiration on your Neptune line, or building disciplined structure on your Saturn line? Yep, and yep. You are, in a very real energetic sense, existing in all places at once.
It’s not that you’re physically there (unless you are, hey there, world traveler!). It’s that the potential for those experiences is already alive and humming, like a radio station constantly broadcasting. You just have to tune your dial by physically traveling there, or even by focusing your energy and intention to pick up the signal via remote activation. This completely flips the script on how we think about travel and philosophy of place.
It’s all about choosing which part of yourself you want to engage with and amplify.
-Feeling stuck and in need of a breakthrough? Maybe you need to go have a conversation with the "you" on your certain Chiron (healing) or Uranus (awakening) line.
-Longing for deep, soulmate-level connection? The "you" on your Venus DC line is probably having a lovely time and has some notes to share about that.
-Ready to build an empire? Your potent Midheaven lines are waiting for you to step into your power.
This perspective is incredibly freeing, isn’t it? Let’s write this down:
1. There’s no single "right" place for you. There are many right places, each offering a different curriculum for your soul.
2. You are never missing out. That magical life in a foreign country isn't a missed opportunity; it's a potentiality that's still available to you. The energy is patient. It'll wait for you.
3. The power is always within you. The map doesn't control you; it describes the energetic weather of a place. You're still the captain of your ship. You choose which waters to sail.
So the next time you look at a map, don’t just see countries and cities. See a whole map of your own potential. See the many lives you are already living. All those versions of you are waving, hoping you’ll come visit so you can integrate their lessons, their joy, and their strength!
The whole world is already your home. You just have to decide which room you want to hang out in next.
Acknowledgement of the world map within
The word "map" usually makes us think of physical places, highways, coastlines, and mountain ranges. We see it as a tool to move our bodies from one point to another. But what if the most important guide you could ever study is the compass you carry within?
This compass, your natal chart, outlines the unseen world of your own being: who you are, what you feel, what you remember, and all you might still become. Its purpose isn't just to guide you on various trips across the country, but a journey into the depths of your own spirit, to corners of your soul you have not yet visited.
Locational astrology connects these two ideas. It suggests that every significant point on your chart doesn't just correspond to a city or a nation; it connects to a specific part of your inner life, awakening a unique feeling or a new way of seeing yourself.
So the first step isn't to pick a place on the globe, as the very first step is to look within. Before you ask "where should I go?" or "what should I do there?", try working with these initial questions from your printable mini-journal that you can download below:
Use this journal to tap into your intuition, slow down, and build a mindful practice. This foundation is quite necessary before you fully dedicate yourself to locational astrology, because its practice relies deeply on your inner wisdom.
It’s also important to note that there is no such thing as a perfect or correct answer. What matters most is honesty, curiosity, and noticing what stirs inside you as you write. Think of this process as a conversation between yourself, the map of the sky, and many chapters of your life.
These questions are great to be used as a foundation that you can go back to over time as you begin your learning journey with locational astrology, as this is an exercise of awakening your intuition. Also, throughout work with 200+ clients so far, the majority of readings have ended up with going back to these questions, and clients having an aha! moment from them.
A chart can suggest where you might feel expansive, challenged, or deeply at home, yet it is your lived experience that breathes life into those sacred insights. You already hold the wisdom! This journal is here to help you access it, at least to scratch the surface, as learning within this practice is quite never ending.
This journal is also printable, at the .PDF file is CMYK. If you need any other by chance, feel free to ask and I will convert it for you.
Locational astrology strips away comfort zone (& gives you freedom)
We walk the same well-worn paths of habit, reacting in ways we recognize, clinging to what feels safe, even when the walls of it press too close, even when the air goes stale, and all in all, when the familiar begins to feel like a cage…
Yet, beyond this comfort zone, just out of sight, a whole new world is ready to be discovered. Places where you might be braver, softer, wilder, more alive than you’ve let yourself imagine. Places where old griefs have hardened into something like wisdom, where untried joys hum just beneath the surface. Maybe even places you’ve been afraid to look at directly, the quiet wounds, the stubborn shadows, the parts of yourself you’ve exiled without meaning to.
Locational astrology has a way of shaking that up, and not with force, but with clarity and proper analysis which can bring a lot of closure and guidance at the same time. It shows you where the edges of your patterns lie, those edges you may not have dared to cross yet, and where life is quietly nudging you to grow!
Keep in mind that every astrocartography line is not something “out there” in the distance, waiting for you to stumble upon it. Each line is already within you. Your birth chart is a map, and that map is you. The planetary pathways stretched across the globe are simply extensions of your own unique inner world, reflected outward onto the earth.
They remind you that you are not limited to a single version of yourself, that you contain multitudes and many possible selves, each one waiting for you to acknowledge each corner of your soul, so you can step forward from the comfort zone with more confidence and assurance along with strengthening your intuition and giving you space to analyze what was your relationship with it in the past.
This is what makes locational astrology so powerful: it reveals the possibility of discovering yourself over and over again. Moving under a certain Venus line might call out the version of you who loves with more openness, who finds beauty more easily, who creates with more flow. Living near Saturn’s influence might call forward the version of you who learns discipline, who builds something lasting from the ground up. These versions are not separate from you because they are you.
They are simply facets that have been waiting for the right context to rise to the surface. So please keep in mind that there is no black and white in locational astrology, and no good and bad. Some sides of you can be more challenging of course, which means they just need more attention to pay to and more inner work.
You can maybe think of it this way. You went to the gym after a very long time. There’s always that body part that gets in shape with most difficulty, for example your abs, but your quads show up after just two gym visits. What does it mean? You need more work on the abs instead of brushing them off. Same goes with your birth chart and ACG map! This is a path to freedom.
When we begin to see our maps this way, the comfort zone loses its grip. Because what once felt like confinement now becomes a doorway…
An introduction to the subtle energies of place
Think of it like this: you are already fluent in this language, you just might not have the vocabulary for it yet.
Every place carries a feeling. Some locations lift you up instantly, as you might arrive at the coast and feel your whole body relax, or step into a vibrant city and sense a rush of excitement. Other places can feel heavier. Maybe you notice stress rising in your chest, a restlessness you cannot quite explain, or even a subtle tension that lingers after you leave. These impressions are not random. They are the subtle energies of place, quietly shaping how you respond to your surroundings. Imagine it like a language of the unseen, and now you are beginning a meaningful journey to learn that sacred language.
Learning to notice these energies is about slowing down enough to pay attention. It’s in the way the air feels, the way people interact, the pace of daily life, or even the unspoken atmosphere of a street or a room. Sometimes the response is nourishing, sometimes it is uncomfortable, and both are meaningful. The places that feel supportive show you what helps you thrive, while the places that stir stress or unease reveal patterns and challenges that may be asking for more attention, instead of running away from it or brushing it off.
In locational astrology, maps and lines offer clues about these dynamics, but true understanding comes from your own lived experience. Two people can stand in the same city and feel completely different things, because the interaction between self and place is deeply personal as every birth chart is unique. Over time, as you reflect on where you’ve felt light, heavy, alive, or restless, you begin to piece together your own unique language of place.
This process is slow and layered. Each memory, each impression, and each moment of noticing adds to your understanding. The subtle energies of place are like a conversation… Sometimes comforting, sometimes challenging, but always revealing something about where you are and who you are becoming.
Why conscious presence is key in locational astrology
Locational astrology is like a map of potential. It highlights energies, but it doesn’t force outcomes. You are still the one steering.
When you bring conscious presence into the mix: awareness of your patterns, mindfulness in your choices, openness to growth, you can actually partner with those planetary influences instead of just being swept along by them. A Saturn line, for instance, might feel heavy at first, but if you lean into it with presence, it could become a period of incredible mastery and self-respect. Without presence, it might just feel like a burden…
In short: your awareness is the activator. Locational astrology shows you the stage, but conscious presence is how you step into your role.
So before planning a big move just because of what a line promises, it’s worth asking: am I ready to show up consciously in this place, with all its gifts and challenges? If the answer is yes, that’s when locational astrology really starts to shine as a tool you can work with mindfully.
Another thing worth remembering is that a place can sometimes amplify what’s already simmering inside you unconsciously. That’s why two people can live under the same planetary line and have completely different experiences. A Mars line might make one person bold and productive, while another finds themselves restless or easily provoked. Neither response is wrong; both are signals.
So it’s great to keep in mind from the very beginning that stress, discomfort, even a sense of being unsettled, are not signs of failure in locational astrology because they’re information.
They show you where something is being stirred, where a pattern may be ready to shift. A challenging location can hold just as much value as a comfortable one, if you approach it from a different POV instead of just being fuelled by fear mongering that you read online about Saturn, Uranus, or Mars lines.
In fact, some of the deepest growth often happens in the places where you’ve felt stretched. Those moments of friction can reveal strengths you didn’t know you had, or show you what truly matters to you… Always remember that all of the lines are a part of you, an extension of you!
The world is your oyster (& now it’s time to find your pearl)
For generations, this beautiful idea came with zero instructions. It was the "figure it out yourself" pep talk. It placed the entire weight of the world on our shoulders, expecting us to find our magic spot through sheer luck or exhausting trial and error.
And now, we have our astrocartography map, not as a rigid set of instructions, but as the most intuitive, personalized travel guide to your own unique potential. That is indeed quite sci-fi if you ask me! It’s a reminder that the energy you’re looking for might just be a plane ride, a road trip, or even a focused intention away.
This tool helps you pry that massive, intimidating oyster open and know exactly where to look for the good stuff. Your "pearl" isn't hidden. It's precisely charted.
Your pearl is that city where your career just clicks into place.
It's that stretch of coast where your creativity flows like the tide.
It's that community where you find your people, the ones who just get you.
It’s your personal place of magic, where the universe isn't just working around you, but with you.
The world is buzzing with different frequencies. Your chart is the key to finding the ones that make your soul hum loudest! And here’s the best part… this isn’t some far-off, mystical thing reserved for the lucky few. It’s available to you, right now.
But a super important thing to acknowledge is that astrocartography doesn’t promise an easy life; it promises a more intentional one. It’s the difference between wandering and navigating, between hoping and knowing. And the moment you hold your map in your hands, something shifts. The world suddenly feels less like chaos and more like a pattern you can read. Possibilities start appearing where you never noticed them before. And that’s the beauty of it—this is your rhythm, your potential, your one-of-a-kind pearl shining back at you. It’s your inner world laid out on the map, ready to be explored.
‘‘Homework’’ book recommendations
As you explore the world of locational astrology, you’ll notice many of the books I recommend are available through free digital libraries like the Internet Archive’s Open Library. This way, you can borrow what you need without feeling pressured to buy anything, though of course, if a book truly speaks to you, supporting the author is always a beautiful thing.
I do most of my reading on a Kindle and via my laptop because it’s lightweight, travel-friendly, and lets me carry a whole astrological library wherever I go. If you’re also someone who’s often on the move or simply prefers a clutter-free learning style, going digital might be just your kind of magic.
Happy reading, and may your learning be as expansive as the maps you’re about to explore. Here are my recommendations for making a solid foundation for strengthening your intuition before beginning your in-depth locational astrology learning:
